Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both.  As a result bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from sneezing or minor bumps.  Osteoporosis means "porous bone".

The leading cause of Osteporosis is a lack of certain hormones, particulary estrogen in women and androgen in men.  Women over the age of 60 are frequently diagnosed with this disease - which means it can be prevented. This condition is more likely to develop in women than men. Women's lighter, thinner bones and longer life spans are also a part of the reason they have a higher risk.

If you had previous fractures your bones might not be as strong.

Steroid and certain prescription medication, can raise the odds that you'll get osteoporosis.

Heavy drinking and smoking is bad for your bones and lead to thinning of bones. Try to kick such a habbit as soon as possible.

Osteoporosis can be prevented by looking after your hormone levels, and eatling healthy with enough exercise.

There are cases where Osteoporosis are inhereted.  If your parents or grandparents suffered from osteoporosis, you may be more likely to get it too.

Signs of Osteoporosis

Osteopenia is a midpoint between having healthy bones and Osteoporosis. This is usually bone pain and weakness in the area where someone had a bone fracture.

Osteopenia is loss of bone mineral density that is the start of Osteoporosis.  Hormonal changes before and/or after manopause where hormone levels decline are reasons for Osteoporosis in women.

Preventing Osteoporosis

Exercises that force your body to work against gravity are good for preventing osteoporosis.  That includes weight bearing exercises, as well as walking, stair climbing and dancing.
